Album Info:Today was just going to be a day around Muncie for my buddy TJ and I, but things quickly changed (as they usually do) when we got word of several crazy moves about an hour further to the south in Connersville. Enjoy!

NS 8000
Title:  NS 8000
Description:  It had been quite a while since my friend TJ and I had been able to find a day where we were both able to watch trains together. But, all that waiting finally came to an end on the final Friday of May. I hadnt done a full day of trains in Muncie yet this year, so I decided with TJ finally being home and available, I would pay him a visit and wed spend the day around town watching trains. Of course, things began to rapidly change once we met up (as our trips usually do). The rebranded Connersville and Northern Railroad (former Big Four Terminal, Former Connersville and New Castle), had recently been taking in several IBCX motors to be fixed at their shops on the north side of Connersville. The last few sets of these engines had been CN painted GP9RMs from the Camp Chase Railroad in Columbus, OH, and SD40-2s from the Indiana and Ohio. The final three SD40-2s from the IORY were brought in on CSX local L425 the evening before, which included IORY 3488, still in BN green, and OHCR 4030, still in corporate maroon. I had been planning on capturing this move since I had found out that it would potentially be happening a few weeks prior to this trip, and with it falling on a day off from work, there was no way I could miss it. TJ isnt too big into the short line realm of railfanning, but thankfully, I was able to convince him to let us change our day up a bit. With the CVNR crew not coming on duty until 0900 that morning, we still had some time to shoot some action around Muncie, which that morning, was very light. But, NS had a few southbound moves to make once I picked up TJ. The first of those trains was NS 143 crossing Walnut Street, which had the class unit ES44AC on the front.

NS 4322
Title:  NS 4322
Description:  NS 4322 was bringing up the rear of the relatively short NS 143 that day. Not sure why this train needed DPU for only being about a mile long. The PSR way of running a railroad confuses me.

NS 4355
Title:  NS 4355
Description:  NS 123 was lined off the Frankfort District as soon as NS 143 cleared 6th Street, so we moved over to Elliot Street to grab the train swinging around the big curve west of the road, where the railroad runs directly east/west and parallels the CSX Indy Line for about a quarter mile.

NS 3624
Title:  NS 3624
Description:  I was beginning to get a little nervous since it was still an hours drive to Connersville from Muncie and it was already after 8 AM. We knew we had more NS traffic coming, but we decided to follow CSX east to Farmland and go straight down State Road 1 from there, hoping we would run into a westbound. And we did; I007 in Parker City. Unfortunately for us, we never heard it call signals until they hit Parker City. And right when we got there, so did it. So, we ended up missing it. However, that ended up going in our favor, as once we made it back to NS rails in Hagerstown, a few of our northbounds were already there. The first one was NS 51G, which was just blasting out of the siding at Bailey after a meet with NS 123. Unfortunately, it began to rain pretty hard here. But, the frame turned out pretty good for the crap conditions.

Title:  NS 1018
Description:  After 51G, we dashed over to the other side of the siding (Walnut Level) where we grabbed a short NS 172 taking the siding passing the grain elevator.

CSX 7767
Title:  CSX 7767
Description:  We had two more northbounds behind 51G and 172, but it was already almost 9 by then, and we opted to leave them behind. There was no movement from the CVNR when we arrived into Connersville, which was a good sign. So, we moved down to the CSX yard where the inbound IBCX power sat. L425 had yet to be disassembled from the night before, so the IBCX power was still connected to CSX engines and cars. Leading the L425 was CSX 7767, a C40-8W still in YN2. A number of YN2 Dash 8s and 9s had been reactivated from storage due to a power shortage CSX has been experiencing this summer. Along with the 7767, another Dash 8/9 pair sat over to the left of the train on the rip track. Kind of was like stepping back into the early 2010s in Connersville again!

CSX 7767
Title:  CSX 7767
Description:  Ever since the Amtrak platform was redone in Connersville, it is impossible to shoot trains framed with the station on the north side of the tracks. And with the yard being almost completely full, getting a shot from the other side wasnt going to happen either. So, I opted for this shot of the station and the Dash 8.

CSX 7905
Title:  CSX 7905
Description:  Then to our surprise, the engines on the rip were fired up. The CSX 9040 which is behind the 7905, is quite the smoker. I got to see that in full effect when I was down this direction about a month prior.

CSX 7767 and CSX 7905
Title:  CSX 7767 and CSX 7905
Description:  We were crossing our fingers for the Dash 8/9 pair to be that days L421 to Morristown. But, a crew hopped into the 7767 instead and the conductor let us know they were the L421 that day and the L425 had been annulled for the day. No matter which train it was, we were happy that something was happening with the train that had the SD40-2s in the mix, and would give the CVNR a chance to grab them today.

MILW 532
Title:  MILW 532
Description:  With L421 now on the other end of the yard for a bit, we knew we had a bit of a time gap before they would come back and finish their work on the west end before departing. Along with the CSX and CVNR moves planned that day, the Whitewater Valley also had a 1000 departure out of Grand Central Station for Metamora. I had assumed one of the Limas was the planned power for the day, but when we heard "532" over the radio, it was an immediate move over to downtown. Sure enough, the MILW SD9 was in charge of the southbound train today. Despite being still covered in oil, seeing the only operating MILW SD9 still in MILW orange is always a treat!

IBCX 3494
Title:  IBCX 3494
Description:  By the time we made it back to CSX, L421 was on the west end of the yard again and had built most of their train for Morristown. However, there were still some cars to dig out of the L425 consist, and getting those required moving the IBCX engines, which gave us our first chance of the day seeing them up close. I botched by shot of the Dash 8 this time, so I opted to just keep my rosters of the IBCX engines.

IBCX 4030
Title:  IBCX 4030
Description:  With the OHCR being so far away from home I never made any attempts to shoot the railroad while it was still a majority maroon. However, since the 4030 and its sister 4023 hung around here so often, I made numerous crazy attempts to shoot them both as many times as possible (most of which failed). This is hands down one of my top 3 favorite paint schemes. Its sad that this units days are over. But, Im glad I got the shots I did.

IBCX 3488
Title:  IBCX 3488
Description:  Then lastly, the 3488. The "BN unit" as it was called to railfans, hung around Lima for most of 2021 and the early part of 2022. I never made enough attempts to see it as I should have. I wish I would have tried a little harder with this one like I did with the OHCR power. But, its too late now.

RMEX 4
Title:  RMEX 4
Description:  I was hoping to grab L421 on the bridge over Western Avenue, but we struck a friendly conversation with the CSX MTO at Connersville, and it departed during our chat. After chatting, I got a text from the conductor on the CVNR that they were headed up toward the interchange with the RMEX 4 and one of the Camp Chase GP9RMs. The RMEX 4 is the ex-MAW 4, a GP7u still wearing its ATSF bluebonnet scheme, and is currently the only operating locomotive on the CVNR. However, since the consist was a bit heavy to bring back, and the interchange between the CVNR and CSX is a bit steep, they needed a little extra weight, so one of the project units was added, which would make an already eye-popping consist even more mind blowing. We worked over to the CVNR, and sure enough the two units were slowly making their way toward the interchange. We grabbed our first shot at 18th Street.

Description:  I wanted to do a telesmash of the engines with the Saint Gabriel Catholic Church steeple as the backdrop. That ended up not working out the way I had hoped, which unfortunately made us miss the engines climbing the steep curved hill up to the interchange with CSX. IBCX 3494
Title:  IBCX 3494
Description:  Knowing the crew would be working for a bit, TJ and I opted to grab some lunch at Hardees down the road. We made our way back to the station and met up with my friend Noah there and waited on the train. Along with the IBCX waybills, the crew also had four plastic pellet hoppers to pick up for their sole customer in the old cabinet warehouse on the north side of town. Thanks to new ownership, new business has quickly found its way to a line that got almost 100% of its revenue from storage cars. After about 45 minutes worth of work, the train slowly reversed back to the interchange; four cars and all five engines in tow.

Description:  The CVNR creeps down the hill and around the tight curve off CSX rails and back onto home rails for the short run north. The RMEX 4 was working hard. I dont think this interchange was built for handling 6 axle locomotives, especially this many in one go. The extra weight from the Camp Chase Geep was a must here for sure!

Title:  IBCX 3494
Description:  IBCX 3494 roster. I cant say I expect to see these engines on these rails this year. But, I cant say I expected to see this railroad running at all this year, much less twice in a span of a month(ish)!

Title:  IBCX 4618
Description:  The CVNR parallels Western Avenue as it passes the Connersville Pizza King. I was hoping to try to incorporate the sign here, but it is almost impossible to do that with a northbound move thanks to a tree that is growing right in front of it.

Description:  The train comes up to the intersection of Western Avenue and 30th Street. I should have taken us a bit further down, but I had committed to turn by the time the train had reached the crossing, and traffic was horrendous and I wasnt able to change my mind.
