Album Info:Here are 22 images of photos that were taken in and about the Pennsylvania Railroad's Machine, Passenger, and Car Shops in Altoona, Pennsylvania. Most of them come from the William E. Burket Collection. The Altoona Machine Shops (in and about 9th Avenue & 12th Street) produced 2,289 steam locomotives between December of 1866 and January of 1904. Thereafter, all locomotive construction took place at the Erecting & Machine Shops in Juniata. The Altoona Machine Shops continued to rebuild and repair locomotives until the great fire that destroyed several its buildings on 27 December 1931 ~ after which, all locomotive work was done in Juniata. The "Altoona Machine Shops" were then renamed the "Altoona Car Shops" and, thereafter, produced or repaired only freight cars, locomotive tenders, and passenger cars.

PRR Altoona Machine Shops, c. 1853
Title:  PRR Altoona Machine Shops, c. 1853
Description:  WB. Here is an image of an official photo that was taken in Altoona, Pennsylvania, c. 1853. Shown here is the Pennsylvania Railroad's Altoona Machine Shops complex. From 1850 until the completion of the Horseshoe Curve in 1854, the PRR's mainline was different than its current form: the tracks paralleled 9th Avenue out of Altoona to Duncansville and the interchange with the Allegheny Portage Railroad ~ instead of curving right at 9th Street, paralleling 10th Avenue past ALTO and SLOPE Towers, then climbing the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin and points West. As such, the mainline tracks and the Passenger Station are actually on the other side of the two-story Master Mechanic's Building and the long shop structure depicted here. Brush Mountain dominates the distance. William E. Burket Collection.

Title:  PRR Altoona Machine Shops, c. 1860
Description:  WB. Here is a photo by an unidentified photographer that was taken in Altoona, Pennsylvania, c. 1860. Prominent here is the cathedral-like roundhouse near the center of the Pennsylvania Railroad's Altoona Machine Shops complex. With the completion of the Horseshoe Curve in 1854, the PRR's mainline took its current form: instead of paralleling 9th Avenue out of Altoona to Duncansville and interchange with the New Portage Railroad, the tracks curved right at 9th Street and paralleled 10th Avenue past SLOPE Tower and up the Allegheny Mountains. Note the two-story Master Mechanic's Building at the left and the unidentified wood-fired "Ten-Wheeler" parked in front of the roundhouse. [For more photos of this roundhouse, see RRPA album http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/archiveThumbs.aspx?id=142429] (Not Burket Collection.)
