Viewing Album: PRR: Good Day for Train Watching ~ 25 July 1960
By:
Thomas C. Ayers
Dates:
7/25/1960 - 7/25/1960
Album Info:
Here are twelve sequential photos that I took at the Pennsylvania Railroad's Hollidaysburg Yards on Monday, 25 July 1960. My bicycle-powered odyssey began at the Yard Master's office at Jones Street, went east to Bald Hill, and then back west to the Passenger Station at Bedford Street. It was a very good day for train watching!

Title:
Westbound Hump, 1960
Description:
Good Day. Here is an original photo that I took of Pennsylvania Railroad property in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, on 25 July 1960. Shown here are the PRR's Westbound Hump in the foreground, and the Eastbound Classification Yard in the background. Also visible is a small Maintenance-of-Way structure on the Hump proper. Most of the gondolas and box cars in the foreground would have been rebuilt in the Samuel Rea Car Shop, but the railroad cars in the background were soon scrapped at the PRR's Reclamation Plant. Given the outline of the stone foundation in this photo, there was once a sizeable tower here. Also visible are the rolling hills of West Loop and the rock outcrops on Locke Mountain in the distance. This photo was taken from atop Bald Hill. #5 of 12.

Title:
PRR 9581, BF-15, 1960
Description:
Good Day. Here is an original photo that I took of Pennsylvania Railroad property in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, on 25 July 1960. Shown here (R to L) are PRR engines #9581, #9589-B, and #9706. All were built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works and are rated at 1,500 horsepower each. #9581 and 9589-B are BF-15's built in 1949, but #9706 is a BF-15A built in 1950. These locomotives are in the process of backing-up to couple onto the train they will pull up the New Portage Branch Line via the Muleshoe Curve. This photo was taken near the Yard Master's Office, at the very eastern end of South Juniata Street. The PRR's Samuel Rea Shop is in the background. Also visible are the wooden water tower (the last vestige of the "Age of Steam"), as well as several all-steel passenger cars on their way to be scrapped at the PRR's Reclamation Plant in Frankstown. #6 of 12.

Good Day. Here is an original photo that I took of a Pennsylvania Railroad train in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, on 25 July 1960. Shown here (F to R) are PRR engines #9581, #9589-B, and #9706. All were built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works and are rated at 1,500 horsepower each. #9581 and 9589-B are BF-15's built in 1949, but #9706 is a BF-15A built in 1950. They are pulling a long string of gondola cars out of the Yard on their way up the New Portage Branch Line to Gallitzin and points West. This photo was taken from the old Union Street Bridge, facing East toward the Samuel Rea Shop. South Juniata Street is visible on the left; a string of vintage gondolas (consigned to maintenance-or-way service) sit next to the moving train; the Madden Boiler Works are on the right in the middle distance. #7 of 12.

Juniata River Railroad Bridge, 1960
Description:
Good Day. Here is an original photo that I took of Pennsylvania Railroad trains in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, on 25 July 1960. Shown here are two westbound PRR freight trains crossing the Juniata River Railroad Bridge at the same time. The "big" train in the foreground features gondolas filled with scrap, while the "little" train in the background includes hopper cars filled with coal. During Hurricane Agnes on 24 June 1972, the surging waters of the usually-bucolic Juniata River flowed over the top of the middle pillar! Also visible in the distance are Hollidaysburg's historic "Chimney Rocks." This photo was taken at the Juniata River Railroad Bridge, near Bedford Street and the Passenger Station. #11 of 12.

PRR 8663, AS-18AM, 1960
Description:
Good Day. Here is an original photo that I took of Pennsylvania Railroad property in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, 25 July 1960. Shown here (R to L) are PRR engines #8663, #8657, and #8675. All are AS-18AM's built by the American Locomotive Company and rated at 1,800 horsepower each. #8663 and #8675 were built in 1958, but #8657 was built in 1957. From here, they will pass the WYE Tower, climb the Allegheny Mountains via the Muleshoe Curve, and then merge with the westbound mainline at Gallitzin. On the far side of the Gallitzin tunnels, these pusher engines will uncouple and head back to East Altoona via the Horseshoe Curve for another run up the Allegheny Mountains. This photo was taken at the Juniata River Railroad Bridge, near Bedford Street and the Passenger Station. #12 of 12.
