End of the line |
Description: |
The remaining 8 C 420s that had been working in freight service on the LIRR sit outside the Morris Park shops after being pulled from service following the opening of the Ronkonkoma electrification. The retirement would be short, as several would return to service, including 225 and 229, which would be repainted in the 1960s era blue and yellow MTA scheme. |

Straight shot |
Description: |
The LIRR Main Line is straight as an arrow for 17 miles from Jamaica to Hicksville. There are not many crossings in this stretch, and most of those are in Mineola. West of Mineola, there are four. The first is Herricks Rd, where we see this westbound Port Jefferson train approaching behind an MP 15 power pack. Herricks Road was the site of one of the more infamous incidents on the LIRR. In 1982, a van with ten kids-all late teens/early 20s-was rolling toward the crossing here. The gates were down, and there was a line of cars waiting, not uncommon given that this is the only place to cross between Mineola and Merillon Av stations. The van ran around the waiting cars, and around the gates. It was hit square on by GP 38-2 265 leading a Port Jefferson train at 65 MPH. All but one of the occupants of the van died in the wreck; one was the daughter of a NY State senator. To no ones surprise, alcohol consumption by the driver was a contributing factor. |

Alcos by the coal dock |
Description: |
A pair of C 420s, now stored since the Ronkonkoma electrification rendered newer diesels available for freight service, pose by the concrete coal dock at Morris Park shop. The Alcos will have a brief reprieve, and return to service for a few more years. The coaling tower has, however, seen its last steam engine. The tracks in the foreground are the Atlantic Branch, which are coming out of the Atlantic Av tunnel, where they have been since just east of Nostrand Av station in Brooklyn. The cars beyond the Alcos are part of the alcohol train, and are equipped to spray an alcohol based chemical on the third rail to keep it from getting iced up in winter. |

Or maybe there will be. A pair of C 420s rendered surplus sit behind the shop at Morris Park. At this point, their future looks dim, but the Centuries will rise again, and have an indian summer for a few years before finally going to scrap. Note the other equipment stashed with the Alcos-a cupola caboose, a box car, and a retire B 60 baggage car. I can recall seeing these on some east end trains in the 1960's. |

Spraying for contact |
Description: |
The LIRR had a couple of cars specially equipped with tanks of alcohol and spraying equipment to shoot alcohol on the third rail. This reduced the likelihood of ice forming on the third rail, preventing contact, thus making it possible for trains to continue running in snowy weather. Today one of the cars is sandwiched between a pair of MP 15s westbound at New Hyde Park Rd. This must have been a preventive move, as the day is clear. |

Bread and Cheese for lunch |
Description: |
A westbound Port Jefferson train crosses the steel bridge at Bread and Cheese Hollow Rd, so named for the food carried by John Smith on his day long ride to establish the town of Smithtown in the 1600s. Legend is the local Native Americans would grant him all the land he could ride around on a bull in a days time. The road below, a trail in those days, was part of his route. Today there are almost no Natives in the area any more, but the name persists. Id bet most LIRR riders are unaware of the history of the road under the bridge. |

Protect power |
Description: |
The Long Island kept these two engines on a tail track at Harold in Long Island City. They were equipped with MU couplers so they could go into the East River tunnels and pull out a stranded train in the event of a failure or emergency. Theyre headed to Jamaica for servicing, here passing Fresh Pond yard on the Montauk Branch. They would get repainted in a few years into an attractive retro 1960's scheme, dark blue with orange ends. |

Rolling on the south shore |
Description: |
Most Montauk trains ran the Central Branch and the Main Line via Hicksville, though if they did not have any stops(some made Mineola, and at least one south shore train during the week made Bethpage), the dispatcher had his choice of routes. This Montauk train was one of those, and we see it rolling west through Valley Stream on its way to city connections at Jamaica. Valley tower, at right of the train, controls the tracks going off to the right, the Far Rockaway Branch, and a connection to the West Hempstead Branch, which diverges to the left out of the photo beyond the train of M 1's in the distance. |

Description: |
An Oyster Bay train stops at the East Williston station. While not the oldest on the Island-that goes to St James, built in 1873-this station is close, built in the late 1800s. |

FA and a shack |
Description: |
FA 614 is holding the rear of this Oyster Bay train. While the station, hidden from view in this photo, is quite attractive, the riders on the westbound side get this more modern looking shelter. Well, it keeps the rain off. |

MP pair |
Description: |
A visit to family in New York yielded me an afternoon of train watching out at Mineola, a nice break from the drama of too many people in one house. I saw several double headers that day, including this pair of MP 15s on an Oyster Bay train. |

Double down to Port Jeff |
Description: |
This Port Jefferson train has a pair of GP 38-2s rolling it west as it makes its stop at Mineola. There were a number of trains that ran with pairs of units, rather than just the one that powered most trains. Usually they were the heavier trains-some runs had 14 or 15 cars-and the parlor heavy Montauk trains. |

LIRR 259 |
Description: |
Some units seem to follow me around, although admittedly on a small(383 route miles, almost all on the same island) its hard not to see the same power over and over. This is the second shot of 259 and 274 together, this time at Mineola on a Montauk train |

A pair and parlors |
Description: |
This Montauk train has a parlor car ahead of the coaches, but the two GP 38s will make easy work of the run out east. |

Always good to see an old friend |
Description: |
Power pack 611 is bringing up the rear on this Oyster Bay train as it clears the main, which will shortly be rocked by another eastbound. Nassau tower, behind the second car, controls the action. In 2016, it still does. |

Oyster Bay rush hour train |
Description: |
Most of the Oyster Bay trains got a locomotive on the east end and a power car on the west end. There was one train that ran with electric heat coaches that got a pair of MP 15s. Here it is passing Mineola. |

In his honor |
Description: |
LIRR was honoring at least a few of their employees who served in the first Gulf War. Here, on engine 258 at Mineola, we see a plaque for Paul Pombonyo. I hope he got home OK following his service, and has gone on to a good life back in the states. |
