The LIRR had a couple of cars specially equipped with tanks of alcohol and spraying equipment to shoot alcohol on the third rail. This reduced the likelihood of ice forming on the third rail, preventing contact, thus making it possible for trains to continue running in snowy weather. Today one of the cars is sandwiched between a pair of MP 15s westbound at New Hyde Park Rd. This must have been a preventive move, as the day is clear. |
