Southern Train No. 48 |
Description: |
Southern Railway train No. 48, the northbound SOUTHERNER, was about to begin its journey to New York City at TERMINAL STATION in New Orleans. Locomotive 2922 was the last of 18 E7As built for the railroad in May 1946 and April 1949, and some of these had replaced the train’s original E6As. The first car was a baggage-dormitory-coach built by Pullman-Standard in 1941, while behind it was a one-year-old coach-bar-lounge built by Budd and used to provide accommodations for non-white passengers. The station was located on the median of Basin Street at 1125 Canal Street. (approximate date of photo) |
