I am curious what the -7 on the end of the unit number means.

The -7 is called SIGO number. Most of brazilian railroads were under government controls until 1996. We had many lines and two gauges managed by one system, the SIGO. The dash after the locomotive and car number allows the system to know which railroad the locomotive belongs to. We do not have spotter marks here like in US. We cant say MRSL 5310 to the system. We must say 5310-7. So, the number is the only way to discover the origin of the locomotive. Imagine two locos with the same road number running in the same line. The system can be confused. We can have two 5310 running, for exemple, in the same area, but the SIGO of the are different. The freight and passenge cars also maneged by SIGO system. See my photos and you will note it. Today the SIGO system is almost full and can not receive more locomotives and cars. Thats why we see some second hand units from US running here with the original numbers, like EFVM do with 9537 (ex- ATSF 9537), 7488, (ex-SP 7488), and so on.
