| Its been just over a year since NJ Transit revealed their three heritage tribute locomotives back in October of 2019. While the two ALPs were decaled tributes to the Pennsylvania Railroad and the Erie Lackawanna the GP40 selected was one of actual Central Railroad of New Jersey heritage. Since the sunny afternoon when it rolled out of the MMC engine house with all details applied its once shiney fresh blue paint has picked up a fine coat of road grime. Upon its release it was highly criticized by a handful of buffs, foamers and historians alike claiming the slightly metallic paint was too bright and "the wrong shade of blue!" Nobody behind the project at NJ Transit intended for the 4109 to be a perfectly accurate historic restoration. The engine has gone through so many physical alterations over its 52-year career that even if the color was 100% perfect the physical details would still be wrong to the bolt counters. In the end the engine was a pretty impressive project that surprised a lot of people. It was completed on a small budget with limited resources and handful of dedicated employees over the course of two weeks. |
