Here is the first of two duplicate 35mm color slides of photos by Philip R. Hastings that were taken at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, in September of 1955. Photo Caption: "Pennsylvania 2-10-4 No. 6402 with freight, upgrade west on approach to Horseshoe Curve, Pennsylvania." PRR engine #6402 is a J-1A (2-10-4) "Texas" built in Juniata during June of 1943 and retired in April of 1958 after just 15 years of revenue service. This photo comes from a color slide set entitled "Steam In Indian Summer" that's produced and distributed by Blackhawk Films of Davenport, Iowa (772-70). This photo is related to a five-page article by David P. Morgan entitled "Holiday Near Hollidaysburg, Helplessness On Horse Shoe, Oblivion At Orbisonia," published originally in the March 1957 issue of "Trains" magazine, pages 46-50. |
