PRR Graveyard Train, 1959
Coal Power. Here is a photo that was published in David W. Seidel's 2008 book entitled "Images Of Rail: Horseshoe Curve," page 63. The photographer is not identified. Photo Caption: "The Altoona Mirror, on August 28, 1959, reported on this 'Graveyard Train': 'A solid train of 15 old Pennsylvania Railroad [I-1SA (2-10-0) "Decapod"] steam locomotives [are shown here] moving around the famed Horseshoe Curve near Altoona. The engines, representing 3,211 tons of metal, were en route from Altoona to a Midwestern steel mill to be cut up for scrap. The Pennsy, which once owned as many as 7,630 steam engines, became completely dieselized or electrified more than two years ago.'" Perhaps K-4S (4-6-2) "Pacific" #1361 ~ enshrined at the Curve's apex ~ offers a farewell salute as its retired brethren pass in review!
