NOPSI Streetcars
There were no less than four New Orleans Public Service Inc. streetcars in this view at the foot of Canal Street, which was then the city's main thoroughfare. This was the end of the line, where the cars turned and awaited their next run. The elevated walkway behind the cars provided pedestrian access over Southern Pacific, Louisville & Nashville and New Orleans Public Belt tracks to the Mississippi River ferry landing. The turret on the other side of the walkway was on the L&N station and the roof next to it was the L&N trainshed. The opening scene of the 1951 movie A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE, where Blanche DuBois gets off of a train, was filmed at this station. (approximate month and day)
