PRR ROSE Tower, c. 1929
Title:  PRR ROSE Tower, c. 1929
Description:  WB. Here is an image of a photo by an unidentified photographer that was taken in Altoona, Pennsylvania, c. 1929. Prominent here is the Pennsylvania Railroad's original ROSE Tower. This structure accommodated yard operations, crew quarters, and supervisory functions. At the left are the east- and westbound passenger tracks: Harrisburg is to the left, Pittsburgh is to the right. In the center, an "I" Class (2-10-0) "Decapod" and an N-5 cabin car are about to couple onto a westbound freight for a shove up the Allegheny Mountains. Above them, an Altoona & Logan Valley streetcar is crossing Juniata's "Red Bridge" on the Altoona-Tyrone Line. (Not Burket Collection.)

Broad "Tower"
Title:  Broad "Tower"
Description:  Not a tower in the usual sense, and more accurately a "block and interlocking station" in Pennsy parlance, Broad controlled suburban movements from Suburban Station, Philadelphia through 30th Street Station-Upper Level and the east end of the Powelton Ave. coach yards. The 130 lever-frame US&S Model 14 interlocking machine was operated by two leverman. Seated behind the desk, front to back, are the Asst. Train Director, Train Director, Operator and, apparently, two yardmasters (one may have been breaking in). Broad was located beneath city streets in Suburban Station and ran a lot of trains through the day - being quite the beehive during rush hours. Date is approximate.
