Car 3344 was built by Budd in 1947 as Seaboard Air Line 6604, one of six round-end bar-lounge observation cars (6600-6605) initially assigned to the upgraded SILVER METEOR and the new SILVER COMET. SAL added rear diaphragms to three of the cars around 1955. All six became Seaboard Coast Line 5840-5845 and then Amtrak 3340-3345. The car was photographed leaving New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal on the northbound PANAMA LIMITED. (approximate month) |

Seaboard round end streamlined observation 6604 is shown, 6-24-2023, at the North Carolina Transportation Museum, Spencer, NC. 6604 was one of six round-end bar-lounge observation cars, 6600-6605, initially assigned to the Silver Meteor and the Silver Comet. Seaboard added rear diaphragms to three of the cars approximately 1955 for mid train use: 6600, 6603 and 6604. The cars later became the Seaboard Coast Line 5840-5845 series and then the Amtrak 3340-3345 series. 6604 became SCL 5844 and then Amtrak 3344. |
