Amtrak #9225 |
Description: |
Dome-4DB-4RM-2SB sleeper-buffet, ex-BN #1455 [not applied], exx-CB&Q #380, nee-#304, Budd, Lot #9669-141, Plan #9535, 1954, NORTH COAST LIMITED, originally had 4 single bedrooms, modified in 1967 to SKY LOUNGE, with 2 single bedrooms removed under the dome for buffet, and tables installed in the dome (to Plan #9535A). The modifying of 1 dome sleeper per consist to the SKY LOUNGE format allowed for the removal of the sleeper buffet lounge observations from the consist of the NORTH COAST LIMITED. The #9225 was later retired and stored until sold in 1985 to Ansco Investments, who used the car as a parts source for their dome sleeper CALIFORNIA (originally owned by the SP&S, also for the NORTH COAST LIMITED). Ansco sold the #9225 to Dave Varilek in 1994, who planned on naming it SILVER PILLOW. The car was located with Dave's other 4 cars in Nebraska until sold in 2014 to Iowa Pacific. Seen here on the EMPIRE BUILDER. Scanned with an Epson V550 from an original Ektachrome 35mm slide. Exact date is approximate. |

Lone Star and Sunset Ltd |
Description: |
The Lone Star (on the left) had arrived from Chicago a couple of hours earlier and will be serviced and cleaned overnight by the Amtrak crew based in Houston. This crew also watered the Sunset Limited (on the right) when it passed through town every other day. This was the westbound Sunset headed to Los Angeles. The dome on the Sunset was an ex-CB&Q car built by Budd in 1954 (the info I have says it ran on the NP North Coast Limited?). It was a 4 duplex single room-4 roomette-4 double bedroom car rebuilt in 1967 with a buffet under the dome. The dome seats were rebuilt as lounge seating. It looks like an ex-Southern sleeper back of the dome (the Southern Crescent was taken over by Amtrak a month or two before). This was probably the transcontinental sleeper (NY-LA). |
