PRR 8671, AS-18AM, c. 1960
Title:  PRR 8671, AS-18AM, c. 1960
Description:  Sweetland. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide of a photo by David R. Sweetland that was taken in Altoona, Pennsylvania, c. 1960. Shown here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #8671, #8666, and #8659. All are AS-18AM's built by the American Locomotive Company in 1958 and rated at 1,800 horsepower each. In this context, they're serving as tail-end pushers on a mixed-cargo freight train on its way up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin, where they'll be uncoupled and returned to East Altoona for yet another helper/pusher run up "The Mountain" to Gallitzin and back. Visible at the far left is SLOPE Tower; the smokestack near the center marks the location of the PRR's 12th Street Car Shops; at the far right is the pit for the old 24th Street Turntable. Photo taken from the 24th Street Bridge.
