PRR 3884, K-4S, 1953 |
Description: |
Kern. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide of a photo by Fred Kern that was taken in Bay Head Junction, New Jersey, on 7 September 1953. The two steam locomotives on the right (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #3884 and #5367. Both are K-4S (4-6-2) "Pacifics" built in Juniata. #3884 was built during July of 1923 and retired in May of 1956, while #5367 was built in May of 1924 and retired in October of 1956. The brightly-colored diesel-electric locomotive on the left is Fairbanks-Morse "Trainmaster" demonstrator #TM-1, built in April of 1953, rated at 2,400 horsepower, and auditioning with the Central Railroad of New Jersey. NKP GP9 #804 - Nickel Plate Road |
Description: |
Although mislabeled by the photographer J.W. Stubblefield as a GP30, this EMD built GP-9 was delivered to the Nickel Plate in January of 1959 (builder #25082). Through the different mergers, it was renumbered NW #2804 and then NS 1474. Behind it is Wabash unit #557 originally delivered by Fairbanks-Morse to the Wabash in May of 1956. It was re-engined by Alco and renumbered 597. |

Wabash H24-66 594 |
Description: |
Here's a couple of gentlemen concered about the front truck of Wabash H24-66 594 at North Kansas City, Missouri on, January 31, 1965, photo by Lou Schmitz, Chuck Zeiler collection. Built as number 554 in May 1956 (c/n 24L895), it was renumbered in 1964 to 594, finally as N&W 3594. As built, it was powered by a 12-cylinder Opposed Piston diesel. In 1964, all eight of Wabash's Train Masters were re-engined by Alco with Model 251B prime movers, and rated at 2350 horsepower. The H24-66 production ran from 1953-1956, with a total of 105 copies produced in Beloit, Wisconsin, and 22 produced by the Canadian Locomotive Company (CLC) of Kingston, Ontario. When introduced as the Train Master in 1953, it was the most powerful single unit, single prime mover railroad locomotive available from any manufacturer, and initiated a horsepower race among all the builders. Four demonstrators were built (TM-1 through TM-4), and the first two became Wabash #550-551, and when re-engined by Alco became #598-599. |

RDG 800 |
Description: |
This photo appears to have been taken in an unidentified Reading yard shortly after the 1953 Fairbanks-Morse unit was delievered to the Reading Co. Interesting, Wikipedia states "Touted by Fairbanks-Morse as "...the most useful locomotive ever built..." upon its introduction in 1953, the 2,400 horsepower (1.8 MW) H-24-66 Train Master was the most powerful single-engine diesel locomotive available, legendary for its pulling power and rapid acceleration. While some railroads saw advantages in the Train Master's greater power, the perception on the part of others that the unit had too much horsepoter (coupled with the difficulties inherent in maintaining the opposed-piston engine, inadequacies in the electrical system, and a higher-than-normal consumption of cooling water) contributed to poor marketplace acceptance of the Tr`in Masters." This unit was the first of 17 built for the Reading. No photographer listed and the date is approximate. |
