Description: |
Volkmer. Here is an image of a photo by William D. Volkmer that was taken in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 23 March 1959. Shown here about to pass under the 24th Street Bridge (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #9722 and #9592. #9722 is a BF-16 built by Baldwin-Lima-Hamilton in March of 1951, rated at 1,600 horsepower, and retired in July of 1966. #9592 is a BF-15 constructed by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in July of 1949, rated at 1,500 horsepower, and retired in June of 1964. In this context, this A-A set is powering a fully-loaded mineral train down the Allegheny Mountains on its way to the Eastbound Receiving Yards in Altoona. Brush Mountain dominates the distance.
