Coal Power. Here is an original photo by an unidentified photographer that was taken in Englewood, Illinois, on 20 July 1947. Shown here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #5474 and #5399. Both are K-4S (4-6-2) "Pacifics." #5474 was built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works during March of 1927 and retired in May of 1948, while #5399 was constructed in Juniata in August of 1924 and retired in November of 1953. Many thanks to Mr. Robert Hess for identifying the latter locomotive. |

It was published originally in the August 1956 issue of "Trains" magazine, page 55. Both of the locomotives in the top two photos are PRR Class K-4S (4-6-2) "Pacifics" that were built in Juniata. Top Photo: #5399 was built in 1924, rebuilt with oscillating cams by Lima Locomotive Works in 1939, and retired in November of 1953.
