Album Info:Along US 12 in northwest Indiana, its possible to race the last electric interurban train left in the United States, the Chicago South Shore and South Bend. Its tracks parallel US 12 for quite a stretch so pacing it isn't difficult if you don't mind breaking the speed limit. Since the catenary replacement project is now completed from the IL/IN state line to South Bend, the trains now can sip along at over 70mph in sections like this one.

CSS 310 - Chicago South Shore and South Bend
Title:  CSS 310 - Chicago South Shore and South Bend
Description:  Just ahead of CSS 310 is a set of catenary tension supports (gray posts) with large gray weights that maintain the overhead wire tension. Weights are added or removed depending on the seasons and average temperatures so the catenary wire is always at the correct tension and height for fast running.

CSS 310 - Chicago South Shore and South Bend
Title:  CSS 310 - Chicago South Shore and South Bend
Description:  The train now reaches speeds over 70 mph in this straight section since the track and catenary upgrade last year was completed. Cost prevented the Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation Distric, parent company of the Chicago South Shore and South Bend, from replacing the wooden catenary supports but several sets of pre-1920's iron supports were replaced during the upgrade.

Chicago South Shore and South Bend Commuter Train
Title:  Chicago South Shore and South Bend Commuter Train
Description:  I tried dogging this train previously and couldn't keep up. If it hadn't been for a few stations it stopped at, I wouldn't have been able to get ahead of it to take these pics. This baby really flies when on a clear stretch!!!
