Similar to the Budd RDC railcars, this GE/Avco railcar was a second generation Arrow II built in 1974 and originally carried the numbers 534-60. Starting in 1983, the cars were rebuilt to be compatible with the new Arrow III's and were renumbered 1234-1303. Retirement came in 1997. No photographer was listed nor the location of this photo. NJT Arrow III #1473 - New Jersey Transit |
| Description: |
Here's an upclose photo of one of the cab ends of the married pair of GE Arrow III commuter cars. Built by GE in 1977-78, they replaced the aging Arrow II cars. They are very similar in external appearances to the Arrow II. Arrow III cars are still in service but a 2018 contract with Bombadier who will be building replacements. I'm not sure that new ones have replaced these cars yet. No photographer was listed nor the location of this photo. Only the month and year were given. | Description: |
The third order of Arrow railcars from GE were the Arrow II models built between 1977-78. Again, similar to the Budd RDC railcars, these provided much needed commuter service for the NJT. The Arrow II railcars were so successful that NJT ordered 200 more new cars, Arrow III's, built as married pairs in 1977-79. Avco supplied the car bodies while GE supplied the power train and assembled them at the Erie, PA, shops. Arrow III cars are still in service but a 2018 contract with Bombadier who will be building replacements. Not sure if they have been delivered as of this date.
