The Ashland Railroad had been on my radar for some time the past few years, and finally I decided to hit it up after getting word from a fellow railfan that the branch from Mansfield to Ashland usually pops with color during the Fall. Ashland operates a daily local to and from the said towns, but it begins its day quite early in the morning. The goal was to shoot it going to Ashland. But, that was not the case, as by the time I made it into Mansfield, it was already working in Ashland. I was a bit worried that I had missed it all together. But thankfully as I got closer to Ashland I could hear radio transmissions between the conductor and engineer. A train master was sitting at the first crossing outside of town, so I ended up moving to the next crossing, CR 1356, and waited there. After some waiting, the train received a warrant to head back to Mansfield. One of two GP9 high hoods was leading the train today, unfortunately long hood, but that was the way they were designed I suppose. |

Welcome to Mansfield |
| Description: |
This giant mural on the massive Centerra Coop elevator greets everyone entering Mansfield from the north. It is a pretty impressive structure and I have seen lots of peoples photos of trains taken against it. The main attraction for most fans here, though, has to be the PRR position light signal bridges, which are located on both sides of town. I thought I had heard a train approaching from the west, but it never showed. And since Ashland doesnt come onto NS rails by the signal bridges, the elevator would be the set up for the final shot. The elevator also utilizes this little center cab switcher when they receive cars. They only had one there today, but I believe this elevator does receive whole trains from time to time. |

I was ready to head back home, but, a green signal for a northbound on Conrail made me stick around a little longer. Soon enough, the scanner chatter of G246 could be heard, and the train continued straight across the diamond on Conrail, which was probably why M217 was holding back. After this, I called it a day. This was my first "real" visit to this area, and I must admit, I was quite pleased with the color and the results! Had a great day! |
