Album Info:
Most, if not all, of the photographs in this album were captured in Northeast Wisconsin in the spring of 2022, so they are mostly CN operating on former C&NW, MILW, and SOO rails, as well as FV&LS operating on former SOO, MILW, C&NW, and GB&W rails. Once in a while I hope to catch ELS and WSOR on former MILW rails too.

Description:
A FV&LS (or FOXY) train crosses the Fox River Navigation Canal via the former CN, historically C&NW, swing bridge in 'The Flats' at Appleton, WI, on 22 Mar. ‘22. I haven't noticed a builder's plate, but according to bridgehunter.com, the Warren through truss swing bridge was built in 1908. However, a recent contributor to that site believes it was built after 1919. A photograph caption in the Post-Crescent on 29 May 1974 states that the bridge was "nearly 50 years old." Over the past several years, I have noticed that some misinformed individuals erroneously refer to ‘The Flats’ as ‘Oneida Flats,’ or some other variation. For all of my life, the historic, industrial heart of Appleton has been simply ‘The Flats.’ However, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries it was referred to as 'The Water Power.'

A FV&LS (or FOXY) train, with a particularly unfriendly crew, parallels Garner's Creek and crosses State St. as it prepares to service the Midwest Paper Group mill at Combined Locks, WI, via former CN, historically C&NW, rails on 22 Mar. '22. Founded in 1889 (some references state 1892) as the Combined Locks Paper Co., it became Combined Paper Mills, Inc. in ‘46 after it purchased a paper mill in PA. Acquired by the National Cash Register Co. in ‘69, it was merged with Appleton Coated Paper Co. in ‘71 to form Appleton Papers, Inc. Commonly known as Appleton Papers Locks Mill, it has been controlled by several different domestic and foreign owners over the years. It was separated from Appleton Papers in ‘00 and became Appleton Coated, LLC. Ten members of the mill’s management purchased the facility from France-based Sequana SA on 19 Dec. ’14. Forced into receivership, it was purchased by scrap dealers, Industrial Assets Corp. and Maynards Industries USA, in Oct. ’17. They bought it to shut it down and gut it. By some miracle, they changed their minds and restarted the paper machines. The facility was re-named Midwest Paper Group ca. 19 Apr. ’18. McKinley Paper Co., a subsidiary of Mexico-based Bio PAPPEL, purchased the facility ca. 3 Feb. '22. Unbelievably, this antagonistic train crew reported me the Outagamie Co. Sheriff's Dept. As I was watching them switch the mill, I saw a deputy pull up to a member of the train crew. The crew member pointed to me and then the deputy drove up to me. The friendly and professional deputy rolled down his window and said, "There is some concern down by the mill about what you are doing up here." I told him, "I'm just watching the train." He said, "You're OK. You can keep doing what you're doing." We wished each other a good day, and he drove away. I was standing on a public sidewalk 400' from railroad property. At no point during the brief chase on this day did I set foot off of a public sidewalk or public street.

'22. Unfortunately, this crew member failed to adequately set the brakes on this boxcar. As soon as the locomotives uncoupled, the boxcar obediently followed right behind them. It rolled far enough to foul the spur from which they intended to extract several other boxcars. I almost never experience schadenfreude, but in this particular instance, I did. (WSI), 100 Prospect St. There used to be a station sign here for L. C. Siding, but the last time I saw it was Sep. '17.

Description:
A CN local parallels Ehlers Rd. and approaches Towmen Rd. as it heads northeast at Shawano Junction, Fox Crossing, Winnebago Co., WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI, from 1855 until 14 Apr. 2016) on 2 Apr. '22. Local was headed for Appleton, Little Chute and Kaukauna, and had two locomotives. The local is transitioning from the former SOO rails to the former C&NW rails. This spot used to be named Fox River Junction, after several segments of the original C&NW main line through Menasha and Neenah were removed and a turnout was installed here which allows the bypass of missing C&NW rails by using former SOO rails. The telephone pole to the left stands along an abandoned portion of the C&NW right-of-way.

A CN local rests on former C&NW rails at the Hwy. G overpass at Snells, WI, on 9 Apr. '22. Snells, formerly known as Snell’s Station or Snell’s Crossing, is now little more than a map dot in the Town of Neenah, Winnebago Co. This small, rural community once included a post office, depot, cheese factory, sawmill, school, and stockyard. It does not look like any real remnants of the original community remain. Even the station sign, erected after the depot was removed, is gone. The former SOO rails, also in use by CN, run parallel on this side of the train.

A CN local, with a friendly engineer, emerges from behind the now idled Clearwater Paper as it heads northwest via former SOO rails at Fox Crossing, Winnebago Co., WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI, from 1855 until 14 Apr. 2016) on 10 Apr. '22. The local was headed for Appleton, Little Chute, and Kaukauna. Clearwater Paper Corp., historically Kimberly-Clark’s Lakeview mill, 249 N. Lake St., Neenah, WI (physically located in Fox Crossing, Winnebago Co., WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI, from 1855 until 14 Apr. 2016)), closed the mill in Jul. '21. It was purchased by KK Integrated Logistics ca. 12 Jan. '22. A new tenant is supposed to be moving into this portion of facility this month. I'm not sure who owns or occupies the blue building to the left, which used to receive rail service but hasn't for some time.

A CN train approaches Lakeview Dr. as it heads southeast via former C&NW rails at Howard, WI, on 16 Apr. '22. The trailhead of the Mountain-Bay State Trail, where another C&NW line branched off to head toward Wausau, can be seen to the left. Train had two locomotives, CN 3142 pulling and CN 3242 mid-train. This was a target of opportunity, so there was no time to find a position to shoot around the crossing gate.

A FV&LS (or FOXY) train parallels, and prepares to cross, S. Whitman Ave. as it returns to the former C&NW yard from the former SOO yard at Appleton Junction, WI, on 16 Apr. '22. It is great to see a former C&NW locomotive plying former C&NW rails. An old caboose is displayed to the left. It is painted as RI 17177. Some references claim it was not their caboose, but MILW. It is currently for sale. I wish I could afford to purchase it (the price is not listed, but, as the old saying goes, if you have to ask, you can't afford it). The W. College Ave. overpass is partially visible in the background.

Description:
A FV&LS (or FOXY) train approaches W. Spencer St. as it returns to the former C&NW yard from the former SOO yard at Appleton Junction, WI, on 16 Apr. '22. It is great to find a former C&NW locomotive plying former C&NW rails. An old caboose is displayed to the left. It is painted as RI 17177. Some references claim it was not their caboose, but MILW. It is currently for sale. I wish I could afford to purchase it (the price is not listed, but, as the old saying goes, if you have to ask, you can't afford it). The W. College Ave. overpass is partially visible in the background.

Description:
Appleton, WI A CN local pauses in front of the depot/yard office at the FV&LS (or FOXY), former C&NW, yard at Appleton Junction, WI, on 17 Apr. '22. Local was setting out cars before continuing on to Little Chute and Kaukauna. There used to be a diamond right about where the rear truck of the lead locomotive rests, from ca. 1874 until at least 1968, where the MLS&W crossed the C&NW. When the MLS&W was absorbed by the C&NW on 1 Sep. 1893, their line became the Ashland Div. of the C&NW. The white building partially visible to the left is the former home of the Harry H. Long Moving and Storage Co., 1001 S. Douglas St. This building dates to at least 1953, when it was listed in the local directory (it was not listed in ’51). The building has a spur, but it hasn’t been used for quite a while (except for occasional MoW equipment). Now called Harry H. Long Moving Storage & Express, Inc., the company, founded in 1917, is still family owned. It moved to a larger facility in Town of Clayton, Winnebago Co., WI in 2001.

GTW 4912 and GTW 5846
Description:
A CN local crosses W. 2nd St. as it departs the FV&LS (or FOXY), former C&NW, yard at Appleton Junction, WI, on 17 Apr. '22. Local set out cars before continuing on to Little Chute and Kaukauna. Carter's Caboose, 1428 W. 2nd St., a small, old, rail side tavern, is partially visible to the right. It dates to at least 1887, when it was a grocery store operated by Peter Leininger. By 1901 it was a sample room (saloon) operated by John Sigl. By ‘30 it was a soft drink establishment owned by Hubert J. Merkel and August F. Brandt (Prohibition was still in effect). By ’36 it was a tavern operated by Albert Giesen, owned by Mrs. Gretchen Merkel. By ’38 it was Bob’s Tavern, still owned by Mrs. Merkel. It was the Junction Tavern from at least ’43-’71, still owned by Mrs. Merkel until at least ’60 (there were at least two different owners between ’67-’71). At some point in the ‘70s it became Pete’s Junction (possibly Palomino Pete’s Junction). It was called Netticoat Junction ca. the ‘90s (owned by Joanne M. ‘Nettie’ Nett). I haven’t learned how long it has been Carter’s Caboose. The former Appleton Wood Products Co. factory, now part of the Miller Electric facility, is partially visible beyond that. Built in 1916, the walls include some nice, decorative brickwork (including cast or carved keystones depicting bowling pins above the windows), which Miller obscured with cheap metal siding at some point after they bought it ca. 1975.

A CN local crosses S. Mason St. while headed northeast via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI, on 17 Apr. '22. Local was headed for Little Chute and Kaukauna. I haven't learned why one side of the bridge is lower than the other, but I have discovered why one side is wider than the other. An old photograph reveals that the right (northbound) lane of S. Mason St. once accommodated a streetcar track and a lane for motor vehicle traffic simultaneously. You can also see that the bridge abutments and piers were designed to support two tracks, but I don't believe this area was ever double-tracked.

Description:
A CN local passes the former C&NW depot at Kaukauna, WI, on 17 Apr. '22. The depot was built in 1947 at the intersection of Depot St. and Draper St., to replace the old, wooden depot. Designed in the Art Moderne style, it originally had flat roofs. The current, gabled roofs were added at some point after 1983. It was once known as the north side depot, as opposed to the MLS&W south side depot. That large, ornate depot disappeared many years ago. I couldn't shoot through the fence at this angle, so I had to hold my camera above the fence and spray and pray.

CN 3823, GTW 5812, et al.
Description:
A CN through freight and a local meet along Union St. at the former Sherry St. grade crossing at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 23 Apr. '22. Through freight had three locomotives, CN 3823 and NS 4384 pulling, as well as NS 4064 mid-train. Local was headed for Waupaca and had one locomotive, GTW 5812. The historic Neenah Cheese & Cold Storage Co. facility and the Murer House are partially visible beyond the train. The WC (later SOO) depot stood on the opposite side of Sherry St. from those two buildings. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard. I don't know when the current, significantly larger yard (extending southwestward from Winneconne Ave.) was built. A 1909 map shows the yard still here, a 1936 map depicts both the old and new yards. The Main St. overpass is in the background to the left.

Description:
SOO 74673 was part of the consist of a CN through freight heading south along Union St. at the former Sherry St. grade crossing at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 23 Apr. '22. SOO 74673 sports the stalk of wheat paint scheme. The paint scheme is often referred to as "sheaf of wheat" or "shock of wheat," but one stalk does not a sheaf nor a shock make. I have also heard it referred to as "wheat stripe." It is always interesting to capture SOO equipment plying former SOO rails. If I had been paying attention, I could have captured a pair of these cars coupled together.

A CN local crosses the Fox River Navigation Canal via the former C&NW swing bridge at Kaukauna, WI, on 24 Apr. '22. Kaukauna Lock 2, historically Lock No. 6, counting from Green Bay, is partially visible to the right. The Warren pony truss bridge was built in 1893, according to http://bridgehunter.com (another reference states 1901). The Ahlstrom-Munksjö NA Specialty Solutions, LLC, Thilmany Mill looms in the background. Founded as the American Pulp & Paper Co. in 1883, it became Thilmany Pulp & Paper Co. (a.k.a. Thilmany, LLC or Thilmany Papers) in 1889, after Oscar Thilmany bought out his partners. It became Expera Specialty Solutions on 26 Jun. 2013, after KPS Capital Partners, LP, acquired it and Wausau Specialty Papers. It was acquired by Finland’s Ahlstrom-Munksjö on 10 Oct. ’18. The rehabilitation of the Kaukauna locks was completed in '15. The bridge was also rehabilitated in order to swing again. This view of the bridge was previously off limits. I wasn't sure if I was permitted to be here or not. I had heard that this was going to become a public recreation trail, but I don't know if it is officially open to the public yet. The fence gates have been removed, and I saw other people passing through, so I took that as a sign that the public was welcome.

A CN local crosses Thilmany Rd. as it prepares to service the Ahlstrom-Munksjö NA Specialty Solutions, LLC, Thilmany Mill (out-of-frame to the right) via former C&NW rails at Kaukauna, WI, on 24 Apr. '22. The train is crossing the new, rerouted portion of Thilmany Rd. and the locomotive is about to cross what was the original route of Thilmany Rd. It appears that the remnants of Stribley Rd. and Thilmany Rd. will now just be referred to as the latter (at least there are not any street signs to indicate otherwise). Portions of both roads were altered or removed during the destruction of the majority of the original Thilmany complex and simultaneous restoration of the oldest part of that facility (the Eagle Paper & Flouring Mill) in 2013 (behind me to the left).
