PRR "Horseshoe Curve," Page 28, 1952 |
Description: |
Here is page one of a two-page track plan by George A. Gloff entitled "Horseshoe Curve And Approach To Gallitzin Tunnels." It was published originally in the May 1952 issue of "Trains" magazine, page 28. In 1952, there were three PRR tunnels under the town of Gallitzin ~ not two, as suggested on the map. The southernmost bore was the New Portage Tunnel: it was completed in 1856 in conjunction with the construction of the Allegheny New Portage Railroad, was double-tracked, and used for eastbound traffic. The middle bore was the Allegheny Tunnel: it was completed by 1854 when the Curve was opened, was single tracked, and used for westbound traffic. And the northernmost bore was the Gallitzin Tunnel: it was completed in 1905 by the PRR, was single tracked, and used for westbound traffic. |
