Album Info:Here are 11 original photos by Mr. George Niles, Jr., that were taken at the Pennsylvania Railroad's Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, perhaps during 1952. I purchased the first eight of these photos via a series of eBay auctions on 06 February 2019; the other three were purchased during an eBay auction on 10 August 2024. Also included is a related photo by another photographer.

Description:  Niles I. Here is the second of 11 original photos by George Niles, Jr., that were taken at the Pennsylvania Railroad's Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, perhaps during 1952. Shown here is PRR engine #6171, a J-1 (2-10-4) "Texas" built in Juniata during September of 1944 and retired in October of 1957 after just 13 years of revenue service. It is pulling a fully-loaded mineral train around the Curve and down the Allegheny Mountains to the Eastbound Receiving Yards in Altoona.

Description:  Niles I. Here is the third of 11 original photos by George Niles, Jr., that were taken at the Pennsylvania Railroad's Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, perhaps during 1952. Shown here (L to R) are PRR engines #5368 and #5508. Both locomotives were built in Juniata. #5368 is a K-4S (4-6-2) "Pacific" built in May of 1924 and retired in September of 1955. #5508 is a T-1 (4-4-4-4) "Duplex" built in December of 1945 and retired in March of 1952. They are pulling a passenger train around the Curve and up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin, where the K-4S will be uncoupled and returned to Altoona for yet another helper run up "The Mountain."

Description:  Niles I. Here is the fourth of 11 original photos by George Niles, Jr., that were taken at the Pennsylvania Railroad's Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, perhaps during 1952. Shown here (L to R) are PRR engines #8798 and #8507. Both are ES-15M road switchers built by GM-EMD and rated at 1,500 horsepower each. #8798 was built in January of 1952, while #8507 is was built in August of 1952. They are serving as helpers for a mail and express train that's rounding the Curve on its way up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin, where they will uncouple and return to Altoona for yet another helper run up "The Mountain." Also visible is PRR/Railway Express Service cabin car #5010.

Both are Class "I" (2-10-0) "Decapods." #4573 was built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as an I-1S during September of 1923, rebuilt in Juniata as an I-1SA in November of 1942, and retired in November of 1955 after 32 years of faithful service. In this context, they're serving as tail-end pushers. The number of the N-5 cabin car is not recorded. (#1 of 2)
