Album Info:Here are ten original photos that I took at the Pennsylvania Railroad's Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 17 August 1961. It was a day-long sojourn for Thomas Harry Lantz and myself. We witnessed a great deal of Pennsylvania Railroad action that day; these photos will give you some sense of our adventures. Description:  Horseshoe Curve-1961. Here is an original photo that I took of a Pennsylvania Railroad steam locomotive at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 17 August 1961. Shown here is PRR engine #1361, a K-4S (4-6-2) "Pacific" built during 1918 and retired in May of 1956. It was put on display at the Curve on 08 June 1957.

Shown here (R to L) are PRR engines #5708, #5707, and #5709. All three locomotives are EP-22's built by EMD in 1952 and rated at 2,250 horsepower each. They are pulling an eastbound mail/express train around the Horseshoe Curve and down the Allegheny Mountains to Altoona and points East.

Description:  Horseshoe Curve-1961. Here is an original photo that I took at the Pennsylvania Railroad's Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 17 August 1961. Shown here are two PRR freight trains: one is eastbound (heading right), the other is westbound (heading left). The eastbound mixed-cargo freight is visible in the foreground. The westbound "Yankee Jet" ~ a merchandise express train from Boston to Chicago in 26 hours or less, powered by six GP-9 locomotives ~ is visible in the background. Description:  Horseshoe Curve-1961. Here is an original photo that I took at the Pennsylvania Railroad's Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 17 August 1961. Shown here is PRR engine #7155 and another unit whose number is not visible. Both were built by EMD and rated at 1,750 horsepower each. #7155 was built in 1958. They are pulling a mixed-cargo freight train around the Horseshoe Curve and down the Allegheny Mountains to Altoona and points East. Visible on the left is Mr. Thomas Harry Lantz of Duncansville, Pennsylvania. He was 14 years old at the time!

They are pulling a westbound mail/express train around the Horseshoe Curve and up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin and points West.

They are pushing a westbound mail/express train around the Horseshoe Curve and up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin and points West. Note: No caboose!

Shown here (R to L) are PRR engines #7128, #7170, and three others that are not visible. All five are EFS-17M's built by EMD in 1957 and rated at 1,750 horsepower each. They are pulling a 50-car eastbound TrucTrain around the Horseshoe Curve and down the Allegheny Mountains to Altoona and points East. Wave to the head-end brakeman in the second unit! As of 04 July 2016, or 55 years later, #7128 ~ now numbered "7580" ~ is in active excursion service with Steam Into History at New Freedom, Pennsylvania.

Shown here (L to R) are PRR engines #9840 and #9510-B. Both were built by EMD and rated at 1,500 horsepower each. #9840 is an EFP-15 built in 1952, but #9510-B is an EF-15 built in 1948. They are pulling a westbound string of empty hopper cars around the Horseshoe Curve and are passing another train on the outermost track. Wave to the fireman!
