Underway
Title:  Underway
Description:  After getting the previous shot, I went down to pull a U turn with the RV, to find the train was just starting to move. OK, cool, the chase is on. The head end passes Castle Rock, a prominent formation on the way from Denver to Colorado Springs.

Claasaic bridge
Title:  Claasaic bridge
Description:  I moved on down to Larkspur, where this Santa Fe lettered overpass crosses the local road I was on. Got the power crossing, verrryyyyy slowly as he made his way upgrade. The line tops out upward of 7000 feet.

High plains panorama
Title:  High plains panorama
Description:  There are several places between Larkspur and Palmer Lake where there are some good, wide views of the line. It runs just a little way out in the plains, not really in the mountains, though even in the foothill regions, the elevation gets pretty high. Were looking toward the east as the train approaches Palmer Lake

Vastness
Title:  Vastness
Description:  The vastness of the landscape dwarfs a 135 car coal train as it makes its way south toward Texas

Holding
Title:  Holding
Description:  The coal train came to a stop just north of Palmer Lake to hold for a northbound. I got him here one last time.

Heres why the coal train was holding
Title:  Heres why the coal train was holding
Description:  Just as I went under the bridge at the south end of town, this northbound showed. I caught him a little farther up, under a large rock outcrop. In the consist is an ex BN GP 50, something of a rarity at this late date.

Moving on
Title:  Moving on
Description:  Needing to keep making progress toward home, I left the two Joint Line trains at Palmer Lake and resumed my trek south. If I had a couple more days, I could have shot a lot of trains here, I saw at least five from the road that I might otherwise have gone after. As I neared Pueblo, I caught up to this southbound grain move. This is the DPU, a grab shot out the window as I rolled down I 25.

The head end
Title:  The head end
Description:  The 75 MPH speed limit on I 25 makes catching trains here a bit easier than most places, and I was soon looking at the lead units. Now, where to get ahead of him for a good shot??

Heres where
Title:  Heres where
Description:  I jumped off the interstate at the next exit I thought would work, went through a single lane underpass, and out to the tracks near a raceway. I found myself at a location called Bragdon on the railroad, just in time to catch the train rolling through a sag, and splitting the signals there.

Classic station sign
Title:  Classic station sign
Description:  Sometimes there are parts of an updated operation that just dont get changed in the new regime, either through benign neglect, or because someone feels the need to preserve things as they were. Not sure which is at work here, but Im glad of it. The grain train passes the classic Santa Fe station sign at Bragdon with 115 cars of grain.

DPU and a mountain
Title:  DPU and a mountain
Description:  The DPU on the grain train rolls away past the racetrack, whose light poles are at right, almost masking the mountains in the distance.

Moving on
Title:  Moving on
Description:  I headed east on US 50, which would take me into Kansas. I stopped for fuel on the far eastern edge of Pueblo, across from the ex Santa Fe line going east, where there was the DPU on a Texas bound coal train, seen here from across the road.

Head end
Title:  Head end
Description:  After fueling, a little farther east was the head end of the coal train, which was getting a refuel itself from a truck, whose tank can be seen behind the train.

Surprise
Title:  Surprise
Description:  As the coal train was getting fueled, the grain train Id shot at Bragdon rolled up behind him on the adjacent track. I caught the head end just as it passed.

Goign away
Title:  Goign away
Description:  The angle was better for the DPU on the grain train, which I caught going away past the signals here.

Rolling east
Title:  Rolling east
Description:  I next caught up to the grain train about 20 miles east at Fowler. The head on shot wasnt great, mostly backlit, but still OK with the towns small grain elevator to add some interest

DPU and a pretty station
Title:  DPU and a pretty station
Description:  The good shot here, and for once I was glad of a DPU, was at the nicely restored Santa Fe station. The DPU on the grain train rolls past in gorgeous light

Title:  Santa Fe cross
Description:  The cross that marked the Santa Fes identity for many years is shown in a classic, and more modern form as the DPUs rear unit passes the station at Fowler

Grab from the cab
Title:  Grab from the cab
Description:  After shooting the grain train by the station in Fowler, I caught up before the tracks swung away near Manzanola. The DPU from the road, the train stretched out along US 50.

Rolling hard
Title:  Rolling hard
Description:  I was about halfway back home from Liberal Kan, where I had overnighted, and saw this eastbound rolling away as I sat at a light in Woodward. BNSF runs their trains like theyre being chased by fire breathing dragons, so I knew even with the delay of waiting for one light, Id have a challenge. I was able to beat him to Quinlan, where this overpass is about a mile off US 412. Got lucky, getting there just ahead of the train, three units and 85 stack platforms.. Too bad I wasnt there in time to get the westbound on the adjacent track. Would have been a nice shot coming around a curve through a cut.

Second round
Title:  Second round
Description:  I figured, as long as Im here, hang a few minutes to see if something else shows, the Transcon being the racetrack it is. Sure enough ten minutes later, here comes another stack, this time five units rolling 113 stack platforms east at a rapid pace. Didnt catch a westbound, but not bad for ten minutes.
