AT&SF SD45-2 5660
Description:
AT&SF SD45-2 5660, Corwith Yard, Chicago, Illinois, July 12, 1982, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Built in May 1972 (c/n 7391-36) it was rebuilt as San Bernardino in March 1986, outshopped in SPSF (Kodachrome) paint, assigned number 7204. It may or may not have actually worn that number. It was renumbered to 5804 and repainted at some date before January 1991 to AT&SF blue warbonnet paint, and became BNSF 6454 on January 8, 2000.

AT&SF SD45-2 5691
Description:
AT&SF SD45-2 5691 ( far right ) at Corwith Yard in Chicago, Illinois on an unknown day in September 1979, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in May 1973 ( c/n 72642-5 ), it was rebuilt at San Bernardino in May 1986 to SD45-2u 5817. It was painted in the SPSF Kodachrome paint scheme and assigned number 7717 so as not to conflict with SP's numbers. I don't know how long it was 7717, if it ever was. It was repainted back to standard AT&SF blue sometime before January 1991, became BNSF 6467 on November 25, 1999, and it appears it now resides in South America.

Description:
AT&SF SD45-2 5702 at Argentine Yard, Kansas City, Kansas on August 14, 1975, Kodachrome by Paul L. Strang, Chuck Zeiler collection. Built in May 1973 (c/n 72642-16) this was one of five AT&SF SD45-2's known to have been painted in Bicentennial paint. It was outshopped by EMD in standard AT&SF blue warbonnet paint, was repainted at San Bernardino sometime around May-June 1975 to bi-centennial paint, repainted back to blue warbonnet August 17, 1977, rebuilt at San Bernardino to SD45-2u 5842 outshopped in October 1986, and became BNSF 6492 January 29, 2000. I count 19 stars on this side, does that mean anything?

AT&SF SD45-2 5704
Description:
AT&SF SD45-2 5704, location, photographer, and exact date unknown, Chuck Zeiler collection. The Kodak Kodachrome slide mount is stamped JAN 76C8, and to me it LOOKS like Corwith Yard. Number 5704 was built in May 1973 (c/n 72642-18) one of five SD45-2's painted in the Bicentennial paint scheme (#'s 5700-5704). The trailing unit has a gold-trimmed medallion with an eagle behind the cab (I believe it was the Great Seal of the United States), this unit has sheet metal in place for the eagle medallion, but it is painted at the time of this photo. Later photos show an eagle in this location. According to http://rosters.gcrossett.com/atsf/ this unit received bi-centennial paint at San Bernardino sometime between January 6-13, 1976, and was repainted back to standard AT&SF blue June 15, 1978. It was rebuilt at San Bernardino to SD45-2u 5834, outshopped during September 1986, and became BNSF 6484 on January 21, 2000. The trailing unit is 5701 built in May 1973 (c/n 72642-15), delivered in blue warbonnet, repainted bi-centennial around March 1975, repainted back to blue April 19, 1977, becoming BNSF 7508 January 19, 2000, and renumbered to BNSF 6523 during December 2006.

Number 5829 was built in June 1973 as AT&SF SD45-2 5675 (c/n 72642-32), rebuilt at San Bernardino during August 1986 to SD45-2u 7229, renumbered to 5829, and on January 22, 2000 it became BNSF 6479.

ATSF B23-7 6386
Description:
AT&SF B23-7 6386, Wolcott, Indiana, February 4, 1987, photo by Chuck Zeiler. At the time of this photo, this was the former TP&W in Indiana. In January 1960, the ATSF & PRR gained joint control (half interests) of the TP&W. When Conrail was created in 1976, the TP&W acquired the former PRR trackage from Effner into Logansport. In 1979, the AT&SF reached agreement to acquire the former PRR's interest in TP&W. The TP&W was merged into AT&SF on December 31, 1983. That lasted until February 3, 1989 when the former TP&W was sold to new investors and the TP&W name was reused.

AT&SF U28CG 7907
Description:
AT&SF U28CG 7907 at Corwith Yard, Chicago, Illinois, October, 1979, photo by Chuck Zeiler. At the time, the Santa Fe wanted to replace the aging EMD F-units in passenger service, and since no builder cataloged a dedicated passenger locomotive, this design was selected because GE had a shorter waiting list and offered a better trade-in deal. Built in August 1966 as AT&SF U28CG 357 (c/n 36000), this was one of only ten U28CG's built, all for the Santa Fe, originally road numbers 350-359, later renumbered 7900-7909. From the beginning accommodations for a steam generator had been designed into the Universal series of GE locomotives by providing an empty space behind the cab. A skid-mounted Vapor-Clarkson steam generator was located in this space on the U28CG's. The fuel tanks were divided to carry water and fuel, and a notch in the frame can be seen for the now-removed water filler pipe. With a split water and fuel underbody tank, the U28CG's had a short range, and were used on secondary trains until the tanks were modified to carry fuel only. There are a couple of protrusions on the roof behind the cab where the steam generator was installed. After the derailment of a U30CG on February 9, 1969, both GE designs were suspect. After a series of tests, the Santa Fe withdrew both models from passenger service and reassigned them to freight duties. It appears there may have been some confusion re-installing the doors below the cab.

AT&SF U30CG 8005
Description:
AT&SF U30CG 8005 at Joliet, Illinois on June 24, 1973, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in November 1967 as AT&SF U30CG 405 ( c/n 36351 ), it was basically a U30C with a cowl superstructure. The original design had the rounded nose flush with the pilot front, but the Santa Fe rejected this, and the locomotives were fitted with a front walkway. Only six U30CG's were built, numbered 400-405. The intended assignment was the Grand Canyon Limited, but that ended on February 9, 1969 when a U30CG derailed hauling the Grand Canyon Limited on Edelstein Hill near Chillicothe, Illinois. The U30CG design was suspected, and both classes of GE passenger locomotives ( U30CG and U28CG ) were placed on freight assignments and the U30CG's renumbered to 8000-8005. The folks pictured were waiting for Southern 2-8-2 4501, due in Joliet soon after this train passed.

The plan was for GE to rebuild the locomotive and lease it ( some were later sold to Conrail ), but that didn't happen and 8047 was scrapped by Cycle Systems in June 1997.

AT&SF RSD15 9844
Description:
AT&SF RSD-15 9844 at San Bernardino, California on an unknown day in May 1975, photo by R. H. Lehmuth, Chuck Zeiler collection. Built as AT&SF RSD-15 844 in January 1959 (c/n 83054) on Alco Order S-3320, it was renumbered in the early 1970's to 9844, and later became LS&I 2405. The RSD-15, also known as a model DL-600B, was Alco's entry in the high horsepower race, which began with Fairbanks-Morse introduction of the 2400 horsepower Train Master. The RSD-15 produced 2400 horsepower from a model 251 diesel prime mover powering six-GE 752 traction motors. The Santa Fe ultimately acquired 50 RSD-15's, originally delivered in the 800 number series, and they introduced the low short hood concept to the USA road switcher market, resulting in the "Alligator" nickname for these locomotives. Production began in 1956, and part way through the Santa Fe production run, the paint scheme was changed from the "Zebra Stripe" scheme to the blue and yellow freight scheme. The box over the S in Santa Fe contains the serpentine pipes to cool the air compressor air.
