Album Info:Most, if not all, of the photographs in this album were captured in Northeast Wisconsin in the spring of 2019, so they are mostly CN operating on former C&NW, GB&W, MILW, and SOO rails. Once in a while I try to catch ELS and WSOR on former MILW rails too.

It sure was nice of the railroad to complete some much-needed brush clearing along the tracks here so that train nuts like me can capture better views of their trains. Unfor}unately it also reveals the garbage dumped here illegally by lazy, stupid, inconsiderate 21st Century Americans.

GTW 6226
Title:  GTW 6226
Description:  A CN local, with about 13 cars, approaches Towmen Rd. as it heads southwest via former Soo Line (SOO) rails at Shawano Junction, Fox Crossing (originally Town of Menasha, WI, from 1855 until 14 Apr. 2016), Winnebago Co., WI on 18 May '19. Local was headed back to Neenah from Shawano. The name of the road is misspelled Towman on the signal relay case. This spot used to be named Fox River Junction, after several segments of the original C&NW main line through Menasha and Neenah were removed and a turnout was installed here (out-of-frame to the right) which allows the bypass of missing C&NW rails by using former SOO rails. The Hwy. 41/Hwy. 10/Hwy. 441 (a.k.a. Tri-County Expressway) interchange (a.k.a. Polish Connection) can be seen in the background. The interchange opened to traffic on 30 Nov. '75, at the time it was simply a bridge to provide access to Hwy. 41 from Menasha. When Hwy. 10 was reconstructed and relocated ca. '97, this interchange was not simultaneously reconstructed to form a full interchange. It was recently reconstructed and expanded; the new, now full interchange was dedicated on 11 Jul. '18.

CN 3229 and CN 3228
Title:  CN 3229 and CN 3228
Description:  A pair of brand spanking new, and sequentially numbered, CN locomotives lead a unit train of tank cars approaching the Main St. overpass at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 2 Jun. '19. The Edward Smith Octagon House, 347 Smith St., stands at left. The house was erected between 1851 and 1854. Edward Smith, who operated a flour mill and had an early interest in the Neenah Paper Co., purchased the home in 1855. It is commonly referred to as the Hiram Smith Octagon House for some reason, Hiram purchased it from his brother Edward at some point. It has been owned by the Neenah Historical Society since 1993. The City of Neenah wanted to demolish it when the over-priced and over-budget Main St. overpass (out of frame to left) was built. Thankfully there were enough intelligent people around to save it.

CREX 1517 and CN 3828
Title:  CREX 1517 and CN 3828
Description:  After setting out and picking up some cars, the motive power of a CN through freight emerges from the north end of the former SOO yard to reassemble its train at the former Adams St. grade crossing at Neenah, WI on 2 Jun. '19. Adams St. was originally Washington St., until at least 1913. I'm curious to learn what Washington did to piss off the "great" City of Neenah. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St. used to be the yard. I don't know when the current yard (a few blocks to the south) was built, but a map from 1909 shows the yard here.

'19. Adams St. was originally Washington St., until at least 1913. I'm curious to learn what Washington did to piss off the "great" City of Neenah. The historic Neenah Cheese & Cold Storage Co. facility, 434 Sherry St., is partially visible in the background at left. It was built in 1902 after the original 1892 building was destroyed by fire and is currently used for storage. The historic Murer House, 432 Sherry St., is partially visible to the right of that. It was built by Felix Murer in 1892 and is currently home to Sherry Town Station. The WC (later SOO) depot stood on the opposite side of Sherry St. from those two buildings; it was built on the north side of Sherry St. on the east side of the tracks in 1891. It replaced the ca. 1871 depot that stood at the west end of Wisconsin Ave. The Sherry St. depot was demolished ca. 1955 when a new depot was built between Main St. and N. Lake St. on the west leg of the wye, about 850 ft. to the northwest. The Main St. overpass is partially visible in the background at left. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St. used to be the yard. Doty St., looks like a church steeple from this perspective, but it is a block east of the church. Several of Neenah's hideous, modern eyesores, posing as architecture, pollute the majority of the skyline.

Description:  A CN local crosses N. State St. as it heads southwest via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI, on 8 Jun. '19. Train was headed back from Little Chute and Kaukauna. The Non-mountable Curb Island (one variant of Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) approved traffic channelization devices) was installed last year as part of Appleton's quest for so-called 'Quiet Zone' status. The parking lot of the historic Flanagan's Stop & Shop is partially visible to the right, if you appreciate an excellent selection of liquor, beer, and wine. As I pulled into their parking lot, I heard a horn signaling the approach of this train. I was forced to photograph the train before going into the store to make my beer selection.

Y at Town of Oshkosh, WI on 9 Jun. '19. The CN microwave tower in the background also stands at the southern Sherman Rd. grade crossing; it stands between the former SOO main line and the former C&NW right-of-way, which runs parallel on the other side of the tree line at right. I'm left to ponder the reason for the unusual jog at the north end of this passing siding. Train had two locomotives, CN 3036 and GECX 2038.

Y as it heads southwest via former SOO rails at Town of Oshkosh, Winnebago Co., WI, on 9 Jun. '19. The CN microwave tower in the background at right also stands at the southern Sherman Rd. grade crossing; it stands between the former SOO main line and the former C&NW right-of-way, which runs parallel on the other side of the tree line at right. I'm left to ponder the reason for the unusual jog at the north end of this passing siding. Train had two locomotives, CN 3036 and GECX 2038.

GTW 6226
Title:  GTW 6226
Description:  GTW 6226 traverses the east leg of the wye at the north end of the CN, former SOO, yard at Neenah, WI on 15 Jun. '19. The remnants of the foundation from the ca. 1955 masonry SOO depot can be seen in the center of the scene. The rail sections supported by concrete blocks and railroad ties rest atop the remnants of the foundation. The masonry depot was built to replace the wooden depot built in 1891 on Sherry St., about 850 ft. to the southeast, which was torn down soon after the new one opened. The white building partially visible beyond the locomotive is, or was, Progressive Paper Storage, Inc. (formerly Kimberly-Clark Warehouse (K-C Warehouse)), 135 Millview Dr. It does not receive rail service, but it looks like there may have been a spur on the northwest side of the building in the past. The Fox Valley Energy Center (formerly Minergy Fox Valley Glass Aggregate Plant) stood to the left, at what is now Arrowhead Park, until demolition was completed in the spring of '16. Opened in Jan. '98, it stood idle since 15 Jun. '13. The P. H. Glatfelter Co. paper mill dominated the skyline in the background for 135 years, the oldest part of the original mill was constructed in 1874. Glatfelter purchased the mill from Bergstrom Paper Co. in 1979. Bergstrom had purchased the mill, originally Winnebago Paper, in 1904. Glatfelter moved the jobs to Ohio in June 2006, the mill stood idle for about two years until it was torn down, demolition was completed in May 2009. The corporate headquarters of Plexus, 1 Plexus Way, (out of frame to left), and an Ascension clinic (formerly Affinity clinic) at 101 Main St. occupy most of the site of the old paper mill. Neenah's newest, modern eyesore, the Gateway office building (also obviously used by Plexus), looms in the background. After razing some more cool, old buildings, construction commenced on 4 May '16 and was completed about a year later. There is no room for historic buildings and classic architecture in Future Neenah.

IC 3110 and GTW 5850
Title:  IC 3110 and GTW 5850
Description:  A CN local bisects the intersection of W. College Ave./Hwy. 125 with S. Memorial Dr./N. Richmond St./Hwy. 47 (probably the busiest intersection, consequently busiest grade crossing, in Appleton) as it heads northeast via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 16 Jun. '19. The interesting brick building behind the train is Good Company, a restaurant established in 1980. It was built between 1895 and ‘01 by the Marshall Paper Co. (a.k.a. Marshall Bros. Wholesale Paper or Marshall Bros. Paper); founded in ‘93 by Simon and Samuel G. Marshall (father and son). It initially operated across Richmond St. at the Marshall & Hammel grain facility (Simon was a partner in that company) until the current building was completed. Samuel's brothers, Louis J. and Harry M., later joined the company, whose products included wrapping paper and printing paper. It used to receive rail service, the spur was on the north side of the building. That spur crossed Richmond St. and also served the Marshall & Hammel Grain Elevator & Warehouse, which stood where the Walgreen's parking lot is now. That spur included a switchback to service Fountain Lumber Co. (J. Fountain Lumber Co.), 129 N. State St., founded by John Fountain in 1897. Louis J. Marshall, the last surviving brother, sold the company when he retired in 1942. The facility was used for a warehouse by Kimberly-Clark (K-C) from at least ‘45 to at least ‘60. It was home to Appleton Furniture Mart ca. ‘74 to ‘77. Baxter’s Beef and Pizza Co. opened here in ‘77. Train was headed for Little Chute and Kaukauna.

IC 3129
Title:  IC 3129
Description:  A CN local parallels the Fox River and approaches the S. Memorial Dr. bridge as it descends the grade from the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI, down into 'The Flats' at Appleton, WI on 18 Jun. '19. Train was headed for Kimberly and Combined Locks. The Appleton Yacht Club and Lutz Park can be seen in the background. The former MILW right-of-way, granting it access to 'The Flats' from Menasha, runs along the opposite bank of the river. The line was abandoned in 1981 and the land has been reclaimed by nature, and the rich snobs who own the homes overlooking the river. About all that remains of this portion of that branch is one of the abutments for the MILW swing bridge that used to cross the river under the S. Memorial Dr. bridge. Over the past several years, I have notice that some misinformed individuals erroneously refer to ‘The Flats’ as ‘Oneida Flats,’ or some other variation. However, the historic, industrial heart of Appleton is simply ‘The Flats.’
