ATSF 7414 |
Description: |
The Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway had not yet renumbered many engines by early 1998, and so we find Santa Fe Dash 8-40B 7414 on the point of the H-BARWAT4-28, setting out some maintenance equipment in Fullerton, California. The 7414 would eventually become BNSF 8604, and LMX Dash 8-39BE 8565 behind it would be returned to General Electric when its lease expired in 2001. |

BNSF 4730 |
Description: |
Burlington Northern Santa Fe train S-LACCHI1-18 (Los Angeles to Chicago double-stacks) departs Hobart Yard, just southeast of downtown Los Angeles, on September 19th, 1998. The small BNSF initials under the cab number on Dash 9-44CW 4730 is an indicator that this is one of a batch of GE diesels delivered to the BNSF without yellow lettering or striping, in order to speed up delivery from the factory. |

Santa Fe 4-8-4 3751 blasts through the Green River Golf Course, just west of Prado Dam, between Corona and Yorba Linda, California, on train O-SBDLAC1-12. The locomotive was moving from its old home in San Bernardino to its new home in Los Angeles, and hauled a short freight en route - primarily for the braking capabilities. |

METX 612 |
Description: |
With their fluted side panels, Metras F40C diesels were interesting beasts. At Tower 12 in Franklin Park, Illinois, an eastbound commuter train is being shoved by F40C 612 (ex-NIRC 52, ex-MILW 52, nee-NWSMT 52) on Halloween 1999. The strong side lighting this morning accentuates these distinctive panels as the train rounds a curve on its way to downtown Chicago. |

AMTK 250 |
Description: |
In April, 1994, Amtrak "San Diegan" #583 arrives at the Irvine, California, station amid construction of the new platforms required for the upcoming second mainline. (With just a single track through the station, though, the signage indicating "Track 1" is overkill.) This was a time of rapid expansion for this line, with double-tracking, new stations and increased service all occurring simultaneously. |

AMTK 810 |
Description: |
Amtrak "San Diegan" #574 arrives in Fullerton, California, in November 1993. Leading this San Diego-bound train is Amtrak Dash 8-40BP 810, pulling a string of six Amfleet cars and a Heritage baggage car, with Amtrak F40PH 293 on the rear. AMTK 810 was built by GE in June 1993, and was still a novelty on the "San Diegans," which were normally pulled by EMD F40PHs. |

BNSF 4718 |
Description: |
On a clear January afternoon, a Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway (the company was not yet reduced in name to just initials) westbound intermodal train dashes through the Fullerton, California, passenger station on its way to Los Angeles Hobart Yard, twenty miles ahead. BNSF Dash 9-44CW 4718, delivered in the former Santa Fes "Superfleet" colors, leads two former Santa Fe Dash 8-40CWs and an ex-Santa Fe SD40-2. |

SP 2628 |
Description: |
Union Pacific's "Huntington Beach Hauler" passes through Stanton, California, as it heads from Anaheim to Huntington Beach ... and the engineer leans out to view the idiot with a camera. Perhaps he is concerned about that broken lading strap dragging along the ballast on the first car, or perhaps hes concerned that trackage in such poor condition (note the angles of the various cars) could result in a derailment, crushing the photographer. But the most likely scenario is that he is taken aback that anyone would want to waste their time photographing the lowly and well used "Crud" powering his train this January 1998 afternoon. |
