They run on this
Title:  They run on this
Description:  Very slowly. This is the ex MP line at Lake Village. In its most recent incarnation, it was the Delta Southern, which seems to have given up the ghost. There is an orange SW in their yard here, but buried deep enough that I could not get at it. The office in town has a storefront with North Louisiana & Arkansas on the window, so they are now the operators of the line, which extends from a connection with UP at Mc Gehee south to a connection with KCS at Tallulah LA.

UP diamonds
Title:  UP diamonds
Description:  Here in Wagoner, UP crosses itself on a diamond. The specifics are that this is the crossing of two predecessors. The MKT Choctaw Sub, which runs from Parsons Kan down to Texas, is the middle of the three tracks at the right of the photo. The diamond, in the center of the photo, is with the ex MP, which runs from KC to Van Buren and Little Rock Ark, via Coffeyville Kan. North of here, almost all the southbounds use the ex MKT, with Little Rock trains taking the connection at top. Northbounds use the MKT from Texas, taking the connection in the foreground, using the ex MP to reach KC. Wish I could have been here about 1980 or so.

Rail bonding
Title:  Rail bonding
Description:  The bond wire on the ex CN line up to Malbaie and eventually the Roberval & Saguenay, mostly used by the Train de Charlevoix, which we will be riding shortly. I dont recall seeing any signals on the line, though there may have been at some point.

Rail and road
Title:  Rail and road
Description:  A look at the signals in Wickliffe OH on the ex NYC, now CSX Chicago Line. The new Darth Vader signals dont have the charm of the old NYC targets, or even the tri light clusters, but they get the job done. The crossing protection is for the E 305th St crossing.

Two to one, then split again
Title:  Two to one, then split again
Description:  The line from Bridgeport to Stevenson is double track from just north of the Tennessee River to this point. CSX owns the track, NS runs on trackage rights. This is the west end of double track at Stevenson. In the immediate foreground is the switch where the NS Memphis District diverges to head west. Im sure theres a reason they did it this way, but it seems to me it would have made more sense, and added some flexibility, to continue the westbound track and have a pair of crossovers. But, I dont run the place.

Description:  I was coming out of the Canaveral National Seashore, when I came to a grade crossing-actually two close together. This is one of the gates to Cape Canaveral, where NASA launches the rockets. Track looks pretty good here.

The Broadway passed here
Title:  The Broadway passed here
Description:  First, the famous Pennsy incarnation, then later the Amtrak version, which I rode past here in 1978. Now, the signals are turned away, and its very likely the last passenger train has knocked down these automatics at 80 MPH.

Unusual sight
Title:  Unusual sight
Description:  The dodger, L 102, was working at the south end of the siding, and in the plant there, so both signals at the north end were lit. The switch was lined from the siding to the main, hence the approach indication, since the signal at 226-5, a couple miles north, was red.

Title:  Train coming
Description:  The signal is clear for the main track at CP South Stilwell. A southbound has entered the block, passing the home signal at North Stilwell, lighting up the board-the signals are approach lit. Hell be in view shortly.

Knocked down
Title:  Knocked down
Description:  The southbound that had the clear signal a few minutes ago now recedes after passing the signal, its DPU pulling away from the now red signals. The signal on the main track, at right, will shortly go dark.

New signal
Title:  New signal
Description:  There appears to be an effort lately to move signals to places where they are easier for C&S crews to access them. There have been a number of signals moved in the last year or so, this one being one of the more recent, moved from a position about a quarter mile up the track to the north. The old location wasnt that hard to get to, but this one right next to a highway crossing is a lot easier.

Approach
Title:  Approach
Description:  An aspect not often seen, since the traffic on this line is not usually heavy enough that trains need to run on each others blocks. In this case, a grain train had gone south a few minutes earlier, and now the dodger was catching up, in the block, and so lighting up the signal here at Baron. This signal was relocated from a position about 1/2 mile north, in a place that was not convenient for a C&S crew to reach in a truck, and now is immediately south of a road crossing. The signal it replaced was installed only a few years ago. You'd think they'd have put it here in the first place.

First flash
Title:  First flash
Description:  The first of a series, the signal at Davidson Road in Siloam Springs was flashing yellow when I pulled up, approach medium. The indication tells the engineer to pass at medium speed, to approach the next signal at medium speed, defined as half of maximum authorized speed. Trains exceeding medium speed must reduce to medium. The next signal, Control Point North Siloam Springs, will display approach, or medium clear.

Back on
Title:  Back on
Description:  The yellow has flashed on again, inidicating approach medium. This aspect will display as yellow over green on a two head signal, more common in the east. The next signal at CP North Siloam Springs, displays yellow, since the siding switch at South Siloam Springs is reversed, causing that signal to be red. The next southbound will meet a northbound at Siloam in about 20 minutes.

Insulated joints
Title:  Insulated joints
Description:  The blocks protected by signals are kept apart by insulated joints, so that trains will not show occupancy til they have crossed into the new block. Here we see automatic signal 465-8 and its insulated joint, which UP has made easy to see by painting it white.

Title:  Now its dark
Description:  The sequence for approach medium is flashing yellow at Davidson Rd-see the next photo. The signal at North Siloam Springs will be displaying approach, as there is a northbound taking the siding there. When hes clear, this signal will turn to high green once the south end of the siding at Siloam is normalled and cleared.

Approach
Title:  Approach
Description:  I was chasing a southbound grain train, and stopped to check the signal at CP North Gentry. I was pleased to see an approach indication, as it meant the switch at South Gentry was lined against him, meaning a meet. A northbound Q train was taking the siding as I was taking this shot.

Restricting, No 1
Title:  Restricting, No 1
Description:  I heard a northbound coming up from Watts, and stopped to check the signal at South Siloam Springs. It was red over red, with the bottom head flashing, a restricting signal. The train-it turned out to the the 181-was going to take the signal for a southbound grain move.

Restricting No 3
Title:  Restricting No 3
Description:  Were back to red over red. As I pulled away, I heard the 181 calling the signal, about the same time the southbound was getting his info from the detector up at Davidson Rd. I decided to get the southbound from the US 412 overpass, and didnt get the 181, which had KCSM 4539 for a leader. Should have chased him to Gentry; the grain train would wait 45 minutes at Watts for a northbound empty coal move.
