The Helm sisters would seem to be shop queens, since I always see them here of late. Coupled to them is 4192, and also in the shot are 4197 (latest "standard" red and gray repaint) and 4219 (ex-CP, only one with a low headlight). |

A who's who of WSOR power |
Description: |
From left, we have 4170, the class unit of what were the original six ex-CRIP SD40-2s acquired by the railroad in the early 2000s (then numbered 4001). It has been recently repainted into a special 40th Anniversary scheme. Then is 4219, ex-CP and the only red and gray unit with a low headlight. 6334 is one of the two Helm lease units (6313 is coupled behind it) than has been on the property since 2017. 4181, trailing the five-unit power move, is ex-BN and one of the last units acquired by the railroad in the Gardner era. 3947, facing off with the lead unit of the power move on the same track, is the first "new" unit brought on to the property under Watco ownership. |

Mismatched Doors and Nose Geese |
Description: |
4182 and 4223 (only SD45 carbody on the WSOR) are two of the five (the others being 4181, 4219 and 4197) six-axle units in the "standard" Watco-era version of the red and gray scheme with the thick gray stripe (instead of the narrow, alternating red and gray chevrons) and white goose logo on the short hood. They also both have mismatched all-gray cab doors on the front side. This was done to 4223 sometime in 2020 (I caught it leading in early January still with its proper door), and 4182 sometime between March and September 2020. |

Although the original 8" Griswold lamps were replaced with the ubiquitous oversized L.E.D.s within the last few years, this crossing still retains its wide-pedestal gate mechanisms which were a common installation on both the C&NW and Milwaukee Road. Similar sets on E. Johnson Street, Baldwin Street, and Sherman Avenue have been replaced over the course of the last decade. |

The Burro set seems to be permanently stored on this siding in Cross Plains, as it's always here when I go by. Never thought to include it in a shot with a train until now. Crossing Center Street |
Description: |
Like nearly every crossing on the WSOR by this point in time, the Milwaukee Road or C&NW-era 8" incandescent lamps on the signals have been replaced with 12" LEDs. However, this crossing has not yet had the entire signals replaced with new gated ones, and the uniquely small, high-pitched Western Railroad Supply Co. "mini" mechanical bell remains. It seems the Milwaukee Road was a fairly heavy user of these bells, with at least two or three remaining on all of WSOR's ex-MILW lines out of Madison until the signal replacements began in earnest under Watco ownership in the mid-2010s. |

Rounding the curve past the Old Feed Mill Restaurant |
Description: |
More Milwaukee Road-style switch stands are evident in this shot. WSOR has begun to replace them around their system under Watco ownership, but the Prairie Sub remains a stronghold for now. The switch the power is on is the west leg of the wye for the Sauk City branch, out of service except for car storage since the Wisconsin River bridge was partially demolished due to shifting piers in 1998. |
