A CN local parallels McDonald Rd. and approaches Hwy. T as it heads north with 2 boxcars via former SOO rails at Lunds, WI, on 19 Sep. '20. The grade crossing had signals until at least Sep. '15, they were replaced by these crossbucks and stop signs sometime between then and Dec. '17. The foundation of the former depot rests in the clump of trees to the left. Of course the next photograph I captured, the one I really liked, with the locomotive crossing the road with a friendly wave from the engineer, did not turn out because the autofocus feature of my camera failed to perform its assigned task. |

A CN local pauses on the former SOO main line at Shawano, WI, on 19 Sep. '20. The crew was preparing to leave those two boxcars on the passing siding before continuing on to another customer. The United Cooperative Feed Mill, 660 E. Seward St., dominates the scene. Between 2015-'17, almost all of the feed mill's buildings were razed and new, larger ones erected in their place during a nearly $7 million expansion project. The SOO, originally W&N, depot stood to the right from 1906 until the fall of 2013. |

A CN local parallels Hwy. MM as it prepares to switch the Shawano Paper Mill (div. of Little Rapids Corp.), W7575 Poplar Rd., Shawano, WI, 54166 (physically located in Town of Richmond) via former C&NW rails at West Shawano, Town of Richmond, Shawano Co., WI, on 19 Sep. '20. Founded as the Wolf River Paper & Fiber Co. on 7 Feb. 1894, the name was changed to Shawano Paper Mills ca. Nov. ‘49. The facility was leased to Little Rapids Pulp Co. (later Little Rapids Corp.) in Feb. ’50, they purchased the facility on 25 Jun. ’55. The name changed to Little Rapids Corp.-Shawano Mill in ‘93, but it is still commonly referred to as Shawano Paper Mill. The area around the mill, which includes some former company houses, used to be referred to as West Shawano. It was labelled as such in the '11 county atlas (Upham & Russell Cos. Plat and Riverview Addition), the '20 township map, and the name still appears on some official property records. The paper mill stands along an approximately 2-mile scrap of the former C&NW mainline which once ran 83 miles from Green Bay to Wausau (this is the only active remnant outside of those two cities). That former main line is now the Mountain-Bay State Trail. It is an awesome bicycle ride, but I (obviously) would prefer to see trains running on it. The fence in the background surrounds the paper mill's water treatment facility, which was built upon the former site of the Shawano Brick Yard (a.k.a. Larson Brick Yard). The brick yard (owned by Charles Larson, and later his son Thomas, for most, if not all, of its existence) produced fine white or cream colored brick from 1891 until 1946. The large facility contained three kilns and its own narrow gauge railway. The paper mill purchased the property at some point after the brick yard closed and eventually demolished the entire facility, to include the Larson mansion. The paper mill's historic office building was constructed in 1901 of brick from that yard. |

Gillett was served by C&NW from 1884 to 1981. This facility is currently served by CN via former SOO rails. I haven't discovered what the old foundation to the right used to be. |

IC 3103 pauses on the CN, former C&NW, bridge over the Fox River (actually remnants of the power canal and head race) at Neenah, WI, on 12 Nov. '20. The local is preparing service Neenah Paper, 135 N. Commercial St., via a remnant of the former C&NW main line. Some sections of the former main line have been removed, but other sections remain to facilitate rail service to several industries. Some of Neenah's bland, unimaginative, contemporary edifices, posing as architecture, dominate the horizon. I am not a fan of modern architecture, obviously. |

Description: |
A CN local services Neenah Paper, 135 N. Commercial St., via a remnant of the former C&NW main line at Neenah, WI, on 12 Nov. '20. The company was founded at Neenah, WI, as the Patten Paper Co. by Azel Wilder Patten in 1873. The original 150’ by 40’ paper mill was built in ‘74 on the former site of the Empire Flour Mill and several smaller businesses. In ‘81, A. W. Patten built a second Patten Paper Co. mill at Appleton, WI. Samuel A. Cook and Frank T. Russell purchased the Neenah mill in early ‘85 and incorporated as the Neenah Paper Co., with A. W. Patten as president. The company was later taken over by the Kimberly family. Some references state they acquired a controlling interest in ’93, others state John A. Kimberly, Jr., bought the mill outright in 1900. When the original portion of the paper mill was built, 4 other sizeable industries stood between its west wall and Cedar St., now N. Commercial St. Numerous additions were erected over the years as the mill expanded westward and northward (some additions were built on pilings above the Fox River). By ’26, when their Mediterranean Revival-style office building (partially visible at far left) was constructed, they occupied the entire small peninsula east of Commercial St. Neenah Paper Co. officially became a division of Kimberly-Clark Corp. in ‘56, and operated as such until it was spun off in 2004. Some sections of the former C&NW main line have been removed, but other sections, like this one, remain to facilitate rail service to several industries. |
